The seven-story College of Nursing building will be constructed on the space between Jonghap Hall and Songjae Hall. The ceremony was attended by Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim, Permanent Director Yeong Hyeon Lee from the Daewoo Educational Foundation, President Hee Sug Ryu of Ajou University Medical Center, and CEO Pil Seung Lee of Poonglim, etc.The new building is scheduled to be completed in May 2018 with a space of 9,235㎡, which will cost 14.1 billion won and include advanced nursing practice rooms, simulation rooms, seminar rooms, classrooms, and laboratories, etc.Ajou's College of Nursing was launched in 1998 with 120 students and 2,215 students have finished the regular and special courses since then. It performed well in the 2014 Colleges of Nursing Evaluation and all of its students have passed the relevant national test in all but one year.President Kim said, "Our College of Nursing has made remarkable progress through its determination and passion despite its relatively short history. Constructing a new building for the College will provide further momentum and synergy to the Game-changing Revolution that is being pursued by the University."President Hee Sug Ryu of Ajou University Medical Center said, "When completed, the building will significantly improve the educational and research environment and take the College a step closer to its goal of 'becoming the best college of nursing in South Korea by fostering next-generation nursing talents.'"< The front view of the new College of Nursing building >

On December 13th, Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim met with students with disabilities in the Community Lounge of the University Library.The event was attended by eight students, two parents, President Kim, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, and Jeong Sun Lee, a staff member from the Center for Students with Disabilities.During the meeting, the student participants discussed the inconveniences and difficulties they have experienced in their campus life with the officials from the University. Among other things, they requested that the facilities, including dormitories and the library, be improved to better accommodate disabled students.President Kim listened to their opinions and said that he would quickly and actively have dormitory facilities improved and provide students with disabilities better support for attending classes, etc. He went on to say, "A disabled student has been to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China with the help of a friend after being selected for the After You Program this summer," adding, "I ask that you take on challenges and seek extensive experience like the student."He also recommended that they look for part-time jobs on and off campus, stating that priority will be given to disabled students for on-campus part-time jobs and 60% of their pay will be covered by the University if they find off-campus jobs.Hyo Jeong Kim (Department of Sociology), who participated in the meeting, said, "This year, I met with many people as a reporter for the University Newspaper and it was good that the professors, students, and staff members I met considered me 'a reporter,' rather than 'a disabled student,'" adding, "I want to ask people not to pay attention to my physical challenge but look at me for who I am."

On the morning of December 9th, the second graduation ceremony was held for the Key Leaders Education Program for Suwon City officials in Ajou University's Jonghap Hall. The Suwon Municipal Government commissioned the University's Graduate School of Public Affairs to operate the Program.The graduation ceremony was attended by the 30 Suwon City officials who participated in the Program and Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom. Also in attendance were President Dong Yeon Kim, Dean Heung Sik Kim of the Graduate School of Public Affairs, and other officials from the University.It began with the presentation of the Certificates of Completion and an address by Dean Kim, followed by congratulatory messages by President Kim and Mayor Yeom. Prior to the ceremony, the graduating officials displayed their policy tasks.The awards presented at the ceremony included the Ajou University President Award, the Suwon City Mayor Award, the Dean of the Graduate School Award, and the Achievement Award.The winners of the awards are as follows:* The Ajou University President Award: Seong Ja Park* The Suwon City Mayor Award: Seong Im Chang* The Dean of the Graduate School Award: Jung Hyeon Kim, Geun Suk Song, and Myeong Hee Hwang* The Achievement Award: Gil Hun Lee, Dong Gyu Chang, and Eun Hee ChoIn his congratulatory message, President Kim said, “I worked as a government official for 30 years before joining Ajou University. During the first 15 years, I considered ‘how’ I should work, and for the next 15 years, the issue was ‘why’ I was working,” adding, “I felt very rewarded and had a sense of achievement while trying to find work that I wanted to do to contribute to social change, instead of just doing what I was asked to.”He went on to say, “I hope that you will be able to make your dreams come true while working as government officials,” adding, “I deeply congratulate you on your graduation.”Mayor Yeom encouraged each and every one of the officials. At a luncheon with the graduates that followed the ceremony, he said, “I ask that you will bring Game-changing Revolution to Suwon City, just like the one that is occurring at Ajou University.”Thirty officials from the Suwon Municipal Government have attended the Key Leaders Education Program, which lasted for 10 months from February. This year marks the second year of the education program. Ajou University held the ‘Exciting Unification Talk’ event on December 6th in Yulgok Hall’s Video Conference Room. The event consisted of lectures, quizzes, and a performance by an invited musician and helped to communicate unification at young people’s eye level.The ‘Exciting Unification Talk’ was held with about 250 people, including students, professors and staff members from the University, and local citizens, participating.It began with an introduction of the Unification Institute by Professor Yong Soon Kim, followed by lectures from Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim and Vice Chairman Jeong Hun Cho of the Future Consensus Institute, a pop quiz on unification, and a Haegeum (Korea’s traditional chordophone) performance by North Korean defector Seong Jin Park.Dr. Soo Seok Koh from the Unification and Culture Institute affiliated with The Joongang Ilbo newspaper then gave a lecture entitled ‘Future of the Korean Peninsula in the Era of Donald Trump,’ followed by another lecture by CEO Yoon Yi Kim of Neuro Associates under the title ‘Five Secrets to Make Your Future Productive.’ In addition, a student who defected from North Korea gave a speech under the title ‘My Experience in South Korea,’ and students who are taking the class ‘Understanding North Korean Society’ had discussions under the theme ‘North Korea, Unification, and the Future from the Perspective of Ajou University Students.’The University organized the event to help build consensus on unification and promote communication between experts and the general public. Ajou is actively conducting various education and research activities related to unification after being selected by the Ministry of Unification as the Unification Education Leading University in March and chosen as the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province in April.

< President & CEO Kwan Sun Lee of Hanmi Pharmaceutical and Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim (from left in the above picture) pose for a picture after signing the agreement. >Ajou University and Hanmi Pharmaceutical signed an agreement on December 5th in Yulgok Hall to transfer a glioblastoma cancer therapy that utilizes stem cells and was developed by the University team led by Professor Hae Young Suh Kim (School of Medicine). The therapy is made by inserting cytosine deaminase (CD) into mesenchymal stem cells collected from the marrow of healthy people. CD turns '5-FC,' an enzyme that does not exist in the human body but is used as an anti-fungal drug, into '5-FU,' which is an anti-cancer drug with extensive coverage. Animal experiments on the drug are currently being conducted and clinical trials on glioblastoma patients are set to begin next year. After that, experiments will be expanded into other cancers including brain tumors.The stem cell therapy developed by Professor Suh has received support through the Health and Medical R&D Project and the Advanced Medical Technology Development Project carried out by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It was also selected in the Patent-linked Consulting Support Project by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute and the Consultant Support for High-tech Bio Medicine R&D Project carried out by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. .Research for developing new drugs, in which the team led by Professor Suh, Hanmi Pharmaceutical, and another team of Professor Sung Soo Kim (School of Medicine) will participate, will receive assistance for the next three years after being chosen for the project to develop essential technologies for the bio medical equipment industry carried out by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Ajou University held a sign-board hanging ceremony on the same day for the Industry-Academia Cooperation Center, which was launched in the College of Pharmacy building to provide effective support for developing new drugs.President Dong Yeon Kim said, "Ajou University is being recognized in external evaluations for its recent achievements in industry-academia cooperation and research activities, etc.," adding, "I am pleased that we can work together with Hanmi Pharmaceutical for technological transfer and research and development, and we will provide every possible support for the project to produce excellent results."The agreement signing ceremony was attended by President Kim, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs Hee Sug Ryu, and Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi from the University, and President & CEO Kwan Sun Lee, Vice President Ji Woong Son, and other officials from Hanmi Pharmaceutical.

The second event to present the achievements of 'Paran Semester – Ajou Creative Activity Program' was held on the afternoon of December 6th in Dasan Hall Auditorium. The event was attended by students participating in Paran Semester, their guiding professors, and other students and was an opportunity for congratulating and encouraging the participants.Prior to the main event, the student participants displayed and explained their task achievements on the ground floor of Dasan Hall. This was then followed by a video on the teams participating in Paran Semester, presentations by 14 teams on their respective tasks, a speech by President Dong Yeon Kim to encourage the students, a summarized evaluation by a judge (Dean Ho Han of the University College), and the presentation of awards. Yeong Lim Ji, who is in the Department of Culture and Content and participated in the first Paran Semester, served as the M.C.The presented awards included the After You Award, the Innovator Award, the Pilot Award, the Turning Point Award, the Star of Tomorrow Award, the Zero to One Award, the Golden Failure Award, and the Great Sailor Award. The Great Sailor Award and three million won in prize money went to Team Smunalbi, consisting of Dong Eun Lee and Da Jin Yoon (both in the Department of Sociology) and Dong Joo Kim (Department of Psychology). The team made a documentary on the daily life of the elderly and was praised for creating a great work, even if none of its members had any previous experience in filming and producing.Thirty-one teams of 86 students participated in the second Paran Semester. Guiding professors and experts from outside the University served as advisors to the students and the University checked their progress through interim and final reports submitted by the students.President Kim said, "While I listened to your presentations, I was convinced that you have all conducted 'practical studies,'" adding, "Our society, including its universities and adults, should provide you with opportunities to do such 'practical studies' rather than only 'theoretical ones.'"He went on to say, "I believe Paran Semester was successful if it made you feel that there was more to do or was still a long way to go," adding, "I ask that you will not be afraid of failure but have the courage to take on challenges." Students should design programs on their own to apply for Paran Semester and receive 3-18 regular credits if the tasks are successfully completed. There is no limitation of the areas in which students may design their tasks, i.e., the humanities, culture and arts, community services, globalization, and industry-academia cooperation. It is also possible to choose or revise programs from among those suggested by the University or professors.The Paran Semester tasks for this semester included making a documentary on the daily life of the elderly, planning and organizing a competition of university bands, exporting used cars to Africa, making independent games, designing and building zero-energy houses, and making smart bicycle locking devices.< Students look at pictures and explanations of building zero-energy houses displayed by Team Sangsang. >< A member of Team Bony Car gives a presentation on exporting used cars to Africa. >

The 2016 Presentation of Ajou Hidden Champions was held at 6 p.m. on December 1st in Woncheon Hall Auditorium at Ajou University.'Ajou Hidden Champions' refers to the strong and competitive companies that are smaller than large conglomerates and discovered by the University students. The University has announced them annually since 2014 to encourage students to enter these companies and to form partnerships with them, including through internship programs.This year, 12 teams of a total of 60 students participated in selecting the Hidden Champions. Each team selected one company from its three shortlisted candidates after visiting them to check their work environment, analyze their work, and interview their officials and conducting other necessary research. Individual teams then gave presentations on their selected companies from the total of 37 candidate companies and the presentation evaluators chose five award-winning teams through an assessment of the presentations. The evaluators consisted of two officials from the selected companies, one official from the Gyeonggi Creative Economy & Innovation Center, Director of the Creative University Job Center, and the leader of the project operation team.Team Amenity received the Grand Award and 1.5 million won in prize money with its presentation on 'Daliworks.' Team Transistor and Team EAP were awarded the First Award and 1 million won for their explanations of 'InBody' and 'PNP Secure,' respectively. Team LIST 5.0 and Team Quantum Dot both took home the Excellence Award and 500,000 won for their respective discoveries of 'Value Chain C&T’ and 'Exem'.In an effort to promote Ajou Hidden Champions, the Creative University Job Center held an on-campus recruiting event in September, with officials from Satrec Initiative and Soosan Heavy Industries – candidate companies for Ajou Hidden Champions – participating, and then arranged a meeting on November 5th between students and graduates working at strong and competitive companies.
