The reunification of Germany and the prospects for a unified Korea were discussed at a talk show held at Ajou University. Ajou Institute of Unification (AIU) invited Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom and German Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Stephan Auer to 'Ajou Unification Talk.' The event, which was held on January 24th and presided over by AIU Director Jung Hun Cho, proposed ideas on inter-Korean cooperation in preparation for the possible reunification of the Korean Peninsula. Mayor Yeom said, "There should be more decentralization of power to local governments to prepare for reunification," adding, "Projects that are carried out by local governments can have more ripple effects on the citizens." He went on to say, "I would like to seek sister relationships with North Korean cities with similar status," adding, "Such exchanges will help address challenges that we will face after the two Koreas are unified." Ambassador Stephan Auer stated, "Over ten years before Germany was reunified, 23 million phone calls were made and 4 million meetings were held between East and West Germany. Local governments played major roles in the exchanges," adding, "Above all, it is important for North and South Koreans to experience the culture of the other side." He also mentioned, "However, you should take flexible approaches because the situations in Germany at the time were completely different from those on the Korean Peninsula today."

Ajou University Professor Chang Hee Suh (School of Medicine) discovered the cause of lupus, an intractable disease. Lupus is a disease in which immune cells attack normal cells due to an immune system abnormality, causing inflammation in other tissues of the human body. A team led by Professor Suh of the Rheumatology Clinic found that the genetic mutation of Ets1 influences the occurrence of lupus. The findings, which are based on joint research with researchers from the Academy of Immunology and Microbiology under the Institute for Basic Science and POSTECH, were published in The Immunity, a renowned academic journal in immunology. Lupus, which involves butterfly-shaped flushing, causes inflammation of the skin, kidney, and joints, etc., and can even be fatal. It is known to occur in about 1 in 1,000 people. While over 60 genetic mutations have been linked to the disease, it was not known which gene directly influences its occurrence. The research team focused on a gene known as 'Ets1' that is most commonly found in Asian lupus patients and discovered that its mutation induces the disease and a certain T cell is a fundamental factor. The team confirmed that Ets1 protein appeared less in the T cells of Korean lupus patients' blood and Ets1's mutation was closely related with the severity of the disease. Researchers explained that a new tissue named 'Tfh2' was found to be significant because it heavily affected immune cells related to worsening clinical symptoms of patients as confirmed in animal testing. Professor Suh said, "The findings were achieved through collaboration between immunologists and clinical doctors," adding, "Animal test results were meaningful in that they helped to identify similar pathological phenomenon in patients, and I look forward to follow-up research to develop new medicines based on the findings."

On December 1st, a team of Ajou University's Department of Civil System Engineering students (Soo Ro Yoon, Ha Jeong Chung, and Yoon Jeong Bae) won the Grand Prize at the 2018 Korean Institute of Building Information Modeling ContestThe Contest was held under the theme "How to Utilize Various Buildings’ Information Based on BIM (Building Information Modeling)." Award winners were selected based on their presentations. BIM, a leading technology for smart construction in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is a digital model that represents the shapes and properties of buildings based on a three-dimensional data model. The Ajou University team conducted Value Engineering of Daryong Railway Bridge located in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, through BIM information under the theme "Bridge VE through BIM." VE (Value Engineering) refers to the activities of analyzing the quality, endurance, and appearance of buildings required to realize a set of functions, including design, construction, and maintenance, at the minimum cost, and then make necessary improvements to achieve them. The students conducted a three-dimensional construction simulation with the CIM (Civil Information Management) program made by Midas IT and proposed recommended routes for cranes and the optimal construction from the perspective of process management and economic feasibility.Ha Jeong Chung said, "BIM and VE are expected to be increasingly important as a way to secure competitiveness as buildings are becoming larger and more complicated, sophisticated, and automated." Earlier in November, the student team received the KICT President Award for its BIM work at the 2018 BIM Awards co-hosted by Building Smart Korea and KICT (Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology).
